Indigo (left) and Bob (right)You finally have a fitness regime figured out and then it hits you; your life gets knocked off course. I'm not talking about falling off the wagon. We have all fallen off the weight loss wagon at least once (or in my case, many times). If you fall off, say you start eating donuts again on Tuesdays because they are buy one get one free you just get back on the wagon. It sounds simple enough (I know, it is not that simple). Trust me when I tell you this, I have fallen off so many times that I had to wait for the next wagon to come by because I was not able to get back on the one I fell off of. However, this musing is not about falling off the wagon. I want to discuss how to go on when you can't go on.

It all started about two months ago when my fat fur-bro Bob starting having issues going to the litter box. Within weeks, he lost 10 plus pounds. I thought our goal was to lose weight? However, his weight loss was not a good sign. Too much weight loss, too fast is never good thing. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago; after a five-day hospital stay, my fur-bro Bob, passed away. Now I'm left asking the question, “Why should I lose weight? You lose weight, you die.” How else would you explain what happened to my fur-bro Bob? When something so drastic happens in your life you begin to question what is really important and what is trivial. Perhaps, things you once enjoying doing, like tossing around a wrinkled piece of paper, just are not fun anymore. Still, I'm left asking, “How can I go on when I can't go on?”

Bob, Sparkles, Benny and IndigoChange can be a good thing or a bad thing. It all depends on what type of change we are talking about. Bad change, like losing your best friend, can send you near and sometimes over the edge. Nothing makes sense anymore and nothing seems to be all that important. Still, while the thoughts in your head are whirling around, you're still fat and coming yourself, closer to death from being unhealthy. While I might not care anymore, sometimes you have to step back and analyse the situation. Is there someone else who does care about you and what happens to you? Often times, the answer is quick, while other times you might have to think for a minute or two. Chances are, you are important to someone, hence a reason to go on. I have two other younger fur-bros Benny and Sparkles. Although they like to torment me, (a lot more now that Bob is gone), I think, they love me. Or at least, love to torment me.

Bob and IndigoSo, how do you go on when you can't go on? You just do. Find a reason to keep pushing forward. There are many hurdles on the weight loss journey, or whatever journey you might be travelling. Take each obstacle as a battle wound and carry on. In time, those wounds will turn into scars. The great thing about scars is they don't hurt as much as open wounds do. For all my friends out there suffering loss and change, remember this: over time, those wounds that you have suffered will heal into scars. The memories will live on forever; they just won't hurt like they do right now in this moment.
