Gibbs on the new deckingHave you ever stopped and wondered about how brave cats are? No, me neither, until this afternoon.  I was giving Gibbs some dinner and I suddenly saw his life through his eyes.  I don’t know where he came from – and that goes for Casey, as well.  Their backgrounds are a complete mystery to me, but what I am in awe of is the fact that whatever happened in their past life – before TDM (The Daily Mews) they just up and left and faced the world not knowing where they’d end up, or what would happen to them.

Don’t you find that astonishing? How many of us humans would remove ourselves from a situation not of our liking, just up sticks and leave? Not knowing where we’ll end up, or what will happen to us? How many of us stay in abusive relationships because the fear of the unknown is worse than what we’re used to? Or how many of us have stayed in jobs that made us unhappy because the job market is so fragile and fraught with anxiety?

We always attribute ‘aloof’ and ‘independent’ to cats, but I think we should add bravery too.  It must be hard to just go where you’ve never been before and hope that the garden where you’ll pitch up in, you’ll be looked upon with kindness.  And if they play their cards right, the lady – or the man – of the house, may smile upon them and adopt them.

I think it takes enormous courage to move out of an unfavourable situation into the wilderness of uncertainty and blag your way into a new home.

Today I saw Casey and Gibbs through new eyes and I’m in awe of their bravery.

A Cats Prayer

Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
