Casey and his new toyA box appeared on the carpet in the front room the other day.  Being a cat with a curious and inquisitive nature, I went over to sniff it to see if there was any hint of what was inside the box.  I couldn’t detect anything of note, so I went back to the sofa and resumed my afternoon nap, which was my morning nap extended.  After a while, mum came into the room and picked up the box.

‘Oh, Casey, what have we got here?’ she enthused, interrupting my dreams, while she fiddled about, opening it.

‘Pray, do tell,’ I inwardly put my dreams on hold while trying to feign the required joyful response of the excitement of a new toy.

Casey and his new toyShe pulled out some coloured crescent shaped pieces and being the clever clogs that she is, she soon had them pieced together in a round shape. Enclosed within this circle was a ball which, with a bit of clever poking about of one’s paw, raced around until I decided to stop it.  Then I made it go around and around again and for about five seconds I was actually enjoying myself.

Of course, it couldn’t last.  Too much frivolity during daylight hours is not good for one’s equilibrium and I flopped to the side of it, wondering what I was supposed to do next.   Mum took matters in hand, and pushed the ball round with the tip of her finger.  I put my paw on top of the ball as it shuzzed round to where I lay on the carpet, exhausted, and gave her a look as if to say: ‘that was enough. No more.’

Casey and the new toyGibbs came into the room at that point and being a cat also with a curious and inquisitive nature, he came over to it and sniffed it.  He took in the scene: me, lying exhausted and faint, and Mum, finger poised above the ball to send it hurtling around the circle again.  Which she did. Gibbs did what was expected of him.  He walked out of the room.

I have played with it a few times when Mum’s not around, but Gibbs hasn’t touched it.  Perhaps coloured circles are to be added to his ever-growing list of things he’s frightened of, feet and shoes being at the top of it.

Till next time,

love Casey xx

A Cats Prayer

Lead me down all the right paths,
Keep me from fleas, bees, and baths.
Let me in should it storm,
Keep me safe, fed, and warm.
