FOR EVERY CAT AN ANGEL written and illustrated by Christine Davis is a sweet little book which can be read in one sitting. Christine sent me this book two years ago when my beloved Garfield found a sunbeam to nap on and at first, even though it is a slim volume, I couldn’t bring myself to read it. When I did finally sit down to read it, I wished that I had read it earlier because it was very comforting.

Christine’s illustrations are very colourful and simple. That the cat in the story is a ginger tabby made it more special to me as most of you who remember Garfield will know he was a big, beautiful, majestic ginger boy!

The story line is also simple and could be read aloud to a child, or they could read it for themselves, however, anyone of any age can read it and enjoy it and feel comforted.

The basic message is that the cat that chooses you as their forever person will be waiting for you when it’s your turn to move onward and you will be united once again, forever.

Although the message is simplistic, it is profound and will comfort all those who grieve for the loss of their cat. One of my favourite illustrations is captioned: ‘They will bring each other gifts for no reason at all’ and shows a woman giving a planter of catnip to the cat, while he, in turn, is giving her a mouse.

The opening page begins: ‘Whenever a kitten is born on earth a guardian angel waits nearby to welcome the kitten into the world and take it under her heavenly wings.’

On each of the full page illustrations, the angel is shown somewhere in the picture – hiding in a tree perhaps. This is one way of saying that ALL our pets have a guardian angel watching over them. I find that a wonderful concept and worth holding on to.
